Keep losing things? Is it how your brain works?

Hey everyone 😀

Where did it go?

I don’t know about you, but I spend a hell of a lot of time looking for things, especially stuff I have just put down….somewhere!

It’s very easy for someone with ADHD – or just a terrible memory – to go through life, picking stuff up, then putting it down, then not having a clue where you put them! One reason for this is that we are easily distracted, so if you are doing something else when you put something down, it is harder to then remember where you put it.. I hope I am making sense 😀

Then, when we are looking for the item, it is easy to get distracted again by other random stimuli, end up doing something completely different like washing up, or playing on the Playstation, before a while later, remembering you were looking for something and half your day is now gone! This is why we are so often late!

Any Solutions?

When you are looking for a way to combat this issue, there are a couple of ways you can try, be incredibly organised (not me!) or sort out dedicated places for everything, so you know where it should be.

Incredibly organised – this doesn’t come easy and for a lot of people with a Neurodiversity, is down right impossible.

Dedicated places – this again is hard to do, but slightly more manageable and comes with a few extra parts to think about….

  • 1) Make sure you are there when the tidying takes place, have an input into where things are kept as its really hard to keep track when a dedicated place is where someone else thinks it makes sense to put things 🤔
  • 2) Try and keep your ‘dedicated places’ close to where they are likely to be used, it may sound simple, but keep your coffee, mugs and kettle all near each other, keep your Playstation games in the drawers next to the console so it’s easy to get to them and put them away.
  • 3) Instead of spending hour looking for a charger for your phone, keep one in a few places around the house where you are most likely to charge it eg kitchen, lounge & bedroom
  • 4) Keep items in clear containers so you can see what is kept where, and use a label maker to stay organised
  • 5) Try and stay consistent – keep the places that you would put things to one area if possible, or for something like car keys, then know they will either be in your bag or hanging on the key rack.

Space or Time Saving?

You can also make a decision whether you want to be space-saving or time-saving, for example, keeping the lids on your storage bowls so you know where they are, even though this takes up more space, it will save you time!

Something that I always struggled to understand was how that when the place is a mess could I find things more quickly that when it was tidy? I always called it ‘organised chaos’ but I think that subconsciously I would tend to put things down in a similar place so I would have an idea where to look, once tidied away, they could be anywhere!

Conclusion

I think anyone looking at my life right now, and this advice above, would be likely to use the phrase ‘do as I say not as I do’ and they would be right 🙄. With each blog I write, and the additional research I do, I hope it can go on to help you as much as I want it to help me 👍

As ever, if you have any comments, tips, advice, please add them below and I will get back to you 😀
